Quality Assurance System (SAQ)

Quality Assurance (QA) system

The Department's Quality Assurance (QA) system is part of the broader Sistema di Assicurazione della Qualità di Ateneo (SAQ), approved by the Quality Assurance Board and the Board of Directors at their meetings on March 25 and 31, 2025. This system defines functions, responsibilities, and monitoring tools, in accordance with national regulations on evaluation, quality assurance, and university accreditation.

Within this system, the Department promotes and guarantees the quality of its teaching, research, and third mission activities by adopting structured planning, monitoring, and self-evaluation procedures. Specifically, with regard to the Degree Programs, the processes related to the management of the educational offering are periodically analyzed and verified, with a view to continuous improvement.

Evaluation activities include the collection of data and indicators, as well as the analysis of student questionnaires, aimed at assessing the level of satisfaction with teaching activities, the preparation received, the organization of courses, the usability of facilities and laboratories, and the overall quality of services offered.

The documentation produced is reviewed by the Degree Program Councils, Department Councils, and Quality Assurance Groups, who prepare periodic reports containing observations, assessments, and proposed actions. These reports are forwarded to the Academic Senate and the Evaluation Committee, with the aim of highlighting any critical issues and proposing corrective measures.

The Department therefore recognizes Quality Assurance as an essential tool for promoting transparency, the active participation of faculty and students, and the shared responsibility of the various stakeholders involved (Coordinators, Councils, Quality Assurance Groups, Steering Committees), thus ensuring consistency with the University's strategic directions and the continuous improvement of its educational and scientific results.

To foster a systematic approach to departmental research and its integration within a quality assurance system, the Department, with Council resolutions of November 20, 2018, and February 20, 2019, established a Departmental Research and Third Mission Quality Assurance Group (AQ-RDTM). The group is made up of scientifically active faculty representing the Department's CUN areas (01, 02, 03, 08 a and b, 09 industrial and information sectors) and designated by the Areas, the Director, and the Deputy Director.

At the Departmental Council meeting of October 1, 2020, the name change from the QA Group for Departmental Research to the AQ-RDTM Commission was formalized, in accordance with the SAQ. At the same meeting, the Commission was also supplemented by the Director's Delegate for Third Mission Activities, assigned to Area 08a, who meets the scientific quality requirements identified by the Department Council at its meeting of November 20, 2018.

Within the AQ-RD Group, the Director represents Area 02, which has not designated its own representative.

The Research Operations Unit supports the AQ-RD/TM Commission and the Director in drafting the SUA-RD.

The AQ-RD/TM Commission carries out the following activities:

  • It assists the Department Director in defining and annually monitoring strategic objectives for research and the Third Mission, and in planning improvement actions, verifying their effectiveness.
  • It conducts reviews of research and the Third Mission, identifying strengths and weaknesses and formulating any proposals for improvement.
It may submit proposals regarding research activities and the criteria for distributing related funds within the Department.
  • It promotes communication within the Department and with other departments involved in research and the Third Mission.
  • The AQ-RD/TM Commission organizes its work based on the deadlines set by the central departments.

AQ-RDTM Commission

  • Prof. Ernesto Cascone (Department Director)
  • Prof. Giuseppina D’Aguì (Deputy Director)
  • Prof. Edoardo Proverbio (Department QA Representative and Member, Area 09a)
  • Prof. Gabriele Bonanno (Member, Area 01)
  • Prof. Candida Milone (Member, Area 03)
  • Prof. Ornella Fiandaca (Member, Area 08a)
  • Prof. Giuseppe Ricciardi (Member, Area 08b)
  • Prof. Antonio Puliafito (Member, Area 09b)

The QA Representative for teaching, research, and the third mission is Prof. Edoardo Proverbio.

A Quality Assurance Group (QA Group) has been established for each Degree Program (CdS) active in the Department of Engineering. Its task is to ensure the constant monitoring of educational activities and support self-evaluation and continuous improvement processes.

The QA Group fosters dialogue between faculty and students and conducts investigative activities regarding the effectiveness and functionality of teaching, study plans, tutoring activities, and student support services.

Among its main tasks are the preparation of the Annual Monitoring Report (SMA) and the Cyclical Review Report, essential documents for evaluating the quality of the Degree Program and identifying any corrective actions. These documents are submitted to the relevant Degree Program Council for approval.
