The vision of the Department of Engineering, in line with the values of the University of Messina, is based on the threefold premise: research should aim to expand the boundaries of knowledge, innovation, and experimentation in all fields of Engineering; teaching should provide students with up-to-date tools for applying the scientific method to Engineering problems and a solid education that builds specialized skills aligned with the needs of the labor market; and the third mission should constitute a fundamental contribution to the cultural, economic, and social development of communities, and Engineering should play a leading role in this contribution.
The core of the Department of Engineering's strategic vision are:
- coordination between research, teaching, third mission, and the institutional and productive realities of the local area; freedom of research and knowledge transfer;
- education in critical thinking and ethical standards among the student community;
- support for students' integration into the workforce;
- contribution to the dissemination of scientific culture and the evolution of society towards sustainable development.
In the long term, the Department of Engineering at the University of Messina aims to establish itself as a leading institution among regional universities and the Strait of Messina area, becoming a point of reference for students, the scientific research community, and the business community. The Department also intends to initiate a process of internationalization, responding to the demand for higher education from Mediterranean countries and other African and Asian countries, which are already represented among the University's student population.
In line with the vision of the University of Messina, as outlined in the 2024-2026 Strategic Plan, the Department intends, within a process of continuous improvement, to enhance its international visibility, creating a crossroads of cultures and ideas capable of positively influencing not only the academic landscape but also the social and economic fabric, promoting intercultural dialogue through concrete actions.
The Department of Engineering believes that scientific research, teaching, and effective technology transfer and knowledge sharing must be integrated into a synergy aimed at fostering the growth of an open community in a multidisciplinary and multicultural environment. This approach aims to attract students, researchers, talented professionals, and funding at the local and European levels, contributing to the technological, socioeconomic, and competitiveness of the local, regional, and national communities. The Department also intends to strengthen long-term partnerships with key players in various engineering fields, promote the creation of innovative businesses, and create qualified job opportunities for younger generations.
Starting from the needs of the global labor market, the Department of Engineering intends to strengthen its teaching and research activities, thereby enhancing its innovation offerings and meeting training needs. This will contribute to strengthening the University's performance, building relationships and developing opportunities consistent with the objectives of the Third Mission. The Department of Engineering operates with a participatory and inclusive approach within an integrated framework that, while adhering to the guidelines of the scientific community and national and international institutional organizations, promotes collaborations with local authorities and the professional and business world for the development of the region.
In line with the 2021-2027 National Research Program, the Department's strategic vision includes the following thematic areas: Health, with specific reference to health technologies; Humanities, with specific reference to the protection of cultural heritage; Security for social systems (in all areas: security of structures, infrastructures and networks, security of natural systems, cyber security); Digital, industry, aerospace (in the areas of digital transition and Industry 4.0, high-performance computing and big data, artificial intelligence and robotics); Climate, energy, sustainable mobility, in all areas where it is addressed (sustainable mobility, climate change, mitigation and adaptation, industrial energy, and environmental energy).
Furthermore, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals of the UN 2030 Agenda, the Department of Engineering's vision is aimed at promoting and implementing scientific activities.
